The internet has grown manifold during this period and commands an increasingly greater mindshare among a bar’s target audience – 18 to 35 year olds. Today, the entire internet market is value at over $60Bn. More than 230 million Americans use the internet regularly. Meanwhile, the ROI of traditional advertising forms – print, television, radio – has steadily decreased. If bar advertising is to be effective today, it needs to move further and further away from traditional advertising mediums and adopt the internet whole heartedly.</p>
<p>Search engine optimization, social media marketing, Google Places, paid advertising, email marketing, etc. are some of the most popular ways to get your business before the millions of internet users. All of these of highly effective, cheap marketing methods, and should form the cornerstone of any bar marketing strategy online.</p>
<p>As any business owner will tell you, word-of-mouth is the most powerful advertising method. Social media allows a bar to replicate this marketing model online. If your site ranks high for a relevant keyword such as “bars/clubs in New York”, you can get a huge amount of traffic without putting in any effort. SEO is truly one of the most powerful advertising methods you can tap into.</p>
<p>Email, video and paid marketing are some other methods that a bar should employ in its advertising strategy online. All these are highly cost-effective advertising solutions that can bring in huge traffic (and prospective customers) while breeding customer loyalty and brand recall.</p>
<p><em>Bar marketing</em> has evolved a great deal over time, and the above outlined methods should rank very high on your priority list when advertising your business. Not only are these highly effective and cheap, but these methods also bring in a wealth of hard statistical data that can give you better insights about your customers, allowing you to fine tune offerings suited to their tastes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The world of bar advertising is in a state of flux right now. Traditional forms of marketing &#8211; print, television, and radio &#8211; have lost their effectiveness as the younger population turns to the internet for its news and entertainment. This is especially true for the target demographic of 18-35 year olds who spend more time on the internet than before a TV screen, and who are much less likely to read a newspaper than visit a news site online (the huge decrease in newspaper circulations is a testimony to this fact). If a bar is to survive and thrive in this environment, it needs to radically alter its marketing strategy.</p>
<p>The internet would form the cornerstone of this new marketing strategy. From being an odd distraction in the early 1990s, it has become one of the most important communication mediums with over 2 billion users worldwide. Facebook has nearly 600 million active users and over 70% Americans are on Facebook. Twitter keeps on growing at breakneck speed with over 150 million active users. Factor in the internet’s inherent viral nature, and you have a mind-numbing opportunity for businesses to advertise their wares to prospective customers.</p>
<p>So how would bar advertising work in the present context?</p>
<p>Any bar advertising campaign focused on the internet would revolve around Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social media marketing, email marketing, and if possible, some form of paid marketing (PPC, media buying, etc.). The best part is that aside from paid marketing, all these other forms of advertising are either free or very cheap, so a bar can reach out to a wide audience without bringing its account books into red.</p>
<p>Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is basically the practice of getting a website to rank in the top 10 pages of Google/Bing /Yahoo for a particular keyword term. A bar based out of Austin, Texas might want to rank high on major search engines for the keyword “bars in Austin” or other similar keywords. When people type in this keyword into the search engine, they would see your website on top of the page, bringing you traffic and (prospective) customers.</p>
<p>Social media marketing is essentially marketing through ‘social media’ – sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. Every business should have a presence on these sites – Facebook and Twitter especially. Social media marketing is even more important for bars because these sites are frequented by the target demographic of 18-35 year olds.<br />
Email marketing is the old workhorse of marketing online. It has been around ever since the dawn of the internet, yet is one of the best ways to get your message across to a wide audience. Email marketing can replace traditional newsletters and breeds customer loyalty – an important factor in a bar’s success. Further, it is very cheap and can be implemented easily.</p>
<p>Finally, paid marketing, though it can burn a hole in your pocket if not implemented carefully, can bring in tons of traffic and prospective customers when used effectively. PPC (Google AdWords), media buying are useful tactics for building traffic to a website quickly and on a large scale.</p>
<p><em>Bar advertising</em> today needs to move beyond the traditional mediums and adopt the internet whole heartedly. The internet is easily the most important communication medium today, and tapping this medium can bring rich dividends to any business.</p>
